![]() ![]() In particular, we don’t fully understand how changes in landscape structure – the composition and configuration of land use types – affect the provision of multiple ecosystem services. While we understand that ecosystem services are critical to human well-being, our current knowledge of the provision of ecosystem services across landscapes contains a number of significant gaps that limit our ability to manage for services and human well-being. This is particularly true in agricultural systems, where human activities to maximize the ecosystem service of food production often lead to the decline of other important ecosystem services. Human activities around the world are rapidly and significantly changing ecosystems, landscapes, biodiversity, and, ultimately, ecosystem services. more Ecosystem services, the benefits that people receive from ecosystems, depend on the movement of organisms and matter across landscapes, as well as the biodiversity and ecosystem functions that are present. We then used generalized linear m.Įcosystem services, the benefits that people receive from ecosystems, depend on the movement of o. Over two years, we measured insect and aphid predator species richness, pest regulation services (i.e., aphid abundance and soybean herbivory), and soybean yield adjacent to and 500m from forest fragments. We investigated how landscape structure influenced insect biodiversity, and how this in turn influenced ecosystem service provision in soybean fields east of Montreal, Quebec. In agricultural landscapes, this lack of knowledge can lead to unintended losses of biodiversity and ecosystem services as we attempt to maximize crop yield. However, our understanding of the links between landscape structure, biodiversity, and ecosystem services remains incomplete. Evidence is rapidly accumulating that biodiversity is positively correlated with the provision of multiple ecosystem services. more Background/Question/Methods Human activities are significantly altering the structure of landscapes, and in turn, the biodiversity and ecosystem functions they encompass. At this point, his future, and that of women’s basketball at Kentucky, certainly looks bright.Ĭheck out our current page about Kentucky Wildcats Women's Basketball.Background/Question/Methods Human activities are significantly altering the structure of landscap. This progress was due to a combination of gradual talent infusion and Mitchell’s ability to develop his coaching philosophy (which partially derives from Pat Summit’s since he spent time under her as an undergraduate assistant) and tailor it to fit the needs of a major Division One program in the Southeastern Conference. After going 17-16 and finishing 5th in the SEC in 2007-8 and 16-16 in 2008-9, the Wildcats made a large jump in 2009-10 when they finished 28-8 and second in the conference. In his three plus years as Wildcat’s head coach, Mitchell’s teams have largely been mediocre but there were major signs of progress last season. Thanks to Regina for this picture of UK's womens basketball coach Matthew Mitchell. ![]() Mitchell’s performance in his two seasons at Morehead was mediocre at best (he posted a 16-13 record in 2005-6 and a 14-16 record in 2006-7) but Kentucky was apparently convinced that this was due to his inability to recruit talent to Morehead State because they offered him their coaching job in the 2007 offseason. His performance there convinced Morehead State to hire him as their head coach in 2005. He held this post for three years then moved on to an assistant’s post at Kentucky. Having developed a thorough knowledge of the high school game, Mitchell was offered a job as an assistant at the University of Florida.
